10 books that were recommended to me

I have to admit I don't usually participate in Top 10 Tuesdays, a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish, but this week's topic really captured my attention, so I couldn't resist.

I've had a number of books recommended to me over the years, mainly from my wonderfully wacky ma-in-law, as well as a few friends, although truth be told I'm usually the one doing the recommending!

But here are the top 10 recommendations that have been given to me!

1. The Help
Two friends, one on each side of the globe, recently recommended this book to me, and (at times I think I must be living in la la land) on Sunday I found out it's being turned into a movie, so this is definitely going towards the top of my TBR pile.

2. Edward Rutherfurd's books: London, Sarum, The Forest
Husband has read, and enjoyed these, and as such as recommended them - but they're just so long!!!!
3. Think Bigger, Michael Hill
This is a biography of Michael Hill, a NZ jeweller, businessman, and entrepreneur. This book was recommended  to me by my brother's girlfriend - and she readily admits she's not much of a reader, so it must be good to hold her attention!

4. Winter in Madrid, C. J Sansom
A friend of mine has just taken a sabbatical from a very interesting job, packed up her bags, and headed to Spain for 6 months - I am very envious! But she's been reading up on all things Spain, including this book, which she's since recommended.

5. Clan of the Cave Bear, Jean M Auel
An oldie, but a goodie, my friend has told me - but I still have to get around to reading it!
6. Novel About My Wife, Emily Perkins
A mother-in-law recommendation that is currently sitting on my shelf waiting to be read!
7. The Lollipop Shoes, Joanne Harris
I have a whole pile of Joanne Harris books waiting to be read, but I'm tempted to start with this one.

8. This Charming Man, Marian Keyes
A recommendation from a real bookworm!

9. Why French Women Don't Get Fat, Mireille Guiliano

10. The Ice Princess, Camilla Lackberg
A friend told me this is meant to be the next 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' sensation!

But I now have a confession to make... I actually haven't read any of these!

  1. oooh, I didn't know about _Winter in Madrid_. I like Sansom, so I'll have to check this out!

I'm also with you on the Rutherford--they sound really good; they are just so intimidating!

  2. I've heard of some of these books but I haven't read any of them.

  3. @ M.J Fifield - don't worry, I haven't read any of them either!

  4. There are some great recommendations in there! My whole bookclub read The Help last year and we all loved it :)

I read London in highschool - it was too long for my attention span then!

I love love love both Joanne Harris and Marian Keyes!

    Happy Reading!

  5. Winter in Madrid looks great. I'm adding it to my TBR pile.

  6. I received the help for my birthday last month and couldn't put it down! The only other one of this bunch I have read is clan of the cave bear..I remember liking it.I always write down your recommendations for my to read list!

  7. It makes me laugh that you put books you haven't read. I have so many books that I bought because of recommendations and haven't read. I can totally relate.

    Check out my list here

  8. Emily Perkin's book is pretty wierd, but set in London. That must have been why I suggested it!

  9. The title of French Women Don't Get Fat is reason enough to read that one! I'll have to check it out.

  10. I have French Women Don't Get Fat in my library and now that I've seen it on two lists I think I will check it out myself and see if I can gain some wisdom from it.
