This week's theme is SCHOOL (or anything related)

"Have I told you what happened to my cousin Laila? When she and her brother were fighting, pushing and pulling each other, over a pencil? Her brother poked her in the eye with that cursed pencil."
p5, The Writing on my Forehead, by Nafisa Haji

I can't say I envy teachers!!

This week's theme is TREES

"The undertakers with their cart moved off in one direction, the Blakes in the other, down the long tree-lined avenue that led to the street."

p178, Burning Bright, by Tracy Chevalier
I'm making rather slow progress through this book at the moment, so I apologise from using it yet again for a teaser, but it worked out perfectly for Theme Thursday!

RECREATION (Any spot that you would go for a break – Parks, resorts, even a library ;) )

"They weren't happy about going to a strange hotel with a baby, so when one of their wealthier customers offered them the use of a small cottage in Rye, a place he claimed was much prettier than Hastings, they were delighted to accept."
p117, Secrets, by Lesley Pearse

This is a rather tenuous link to the theme I'm afraid. Secrets is the story of 12-year-old Adele who's younger sister has just been killed, her mother admitted to the mad house, her father doesn't want her and she's ended up in a boarding house for children where she is abused by the woman's husband - so there haven't been many trips to parks or libraries!

This snippet, however, relates to Adele's grandmother, and she's recollecting her honeymoon - surely there would have been a bit of "recreation" occurring then?! ;)

PATHWAYS

"'...so you don't miss the bright lights of London?' asked the interviewer with an enormous wink, and Roz saw out of the corner of her eye the headlights of a car drawing nearer, along the narrow lane leading to her house."

LOCATION

"But Job lived in big-farm country, where many men lost a finger to a sickle on a mower or to a spinning auger by the age of thirty-five. They wore baseball caps, given to them by farm-implement or bull-semen salesmen, with promotional slogans like Western Breeders or Snap-On Tools, or simply Case. Men were not pretty in Godsfinger, Alberta."

ANY ACTION (go, walk, close, clap etc)

"I ripped off the bandage and applied a generous blob, wincing against the heat that started to build up. I smeared more on and then more again and even daubed the burn on my forearm, then wrapped my hand in a clean dish towel, setting the empty bowl in the sink for the morning."

This week's theme is "facial parts"

"...an extraordinary observer might have seen that the chin was very pointed and pronounced; that the big eyes were full of spirit and vivacity; that the mouth was sweet-lipped and expressive; that the forehead was broad and full; in short, our discerning extraordinary observer might have concluded that no commonplace soul inhabited the body of this stray woman-child of whom shy Matthew Cuthbert was so ludicrously afraid."
p14, Anne of Green Gables, by L.M. Montgomery

(This week's theme was much easier than last week's fourth of July)!

This week's theme is "4th of July celebrations"

However, I have flicked through all the books on my bedside table and have yet to find any snippet relating to 4th of July, so I've instead settled on one to do with "celebrations"

"Already waiters were circling with trays of drinks and platters of food. The tables had been moved aside and people were grouped, laughing and chatting, beside the long wall where the covered photographs were hung."
p96, The Villa Girls, by Nicky Pellegrino

As you can see, I'm still slightly hung up on this book, but it's such a goodie you all just have to read it!

This week's theme is "male"

"Mesha looked taller and broader than I remembered and the typically mischievous and boyish demeanour he once had was now gone. He seemed older and more serious but his hug was just as warm as the one that he'd given me that day on the platform when he left home to serve in the JNA."

This week's theme is "shapes"
Wow! This is a tough one, but I've found a snippet I think will fit today's theme:

"When I think of the farm, I think of mud. Lining my husband's fingernails and encrusting the children's knee and hair. Sucking at my feet like a greedy newborn on the breast. Marching in boot-shaped patches across the plank floors of the house."
p49, Mudbound, by Hillary Jordan

This week's theme is "numbers"

"If a one-night companion was all Morgan had wanted, he wouldn't have bothered asking Betty to write. Maybe he wasn't as insincere as he'd appeared. Perhaps his initial attraction to Liz was genuine, but a single glance at the stunning blonde had cured his interest."

This week's theme is "colours"

"I pictured Kat in her house, perched high on stilts as all the island houses were. It was the colour of lemons. I could see her sitting at the long oak table in the kitchen where over the years she, Hepzibah, and my mother had cracked and picked then thousand blue crabs. 'The Three Egreteers,' my father had called them."

This week's theme is "conversation"

"Ah, Davenport," he said, tapping the bench beside him. "Take a seat. You have an inquiring look on your face, so how may I assist you?
Fletcher sat beside him. "I only wanted to ask your opinion on why the jury has been out for so long. Should I read anything into it?"
p177, Sons of Fortune, by Jeffrey Archer
