Book Beginnings...on a Friday

A little bit of fun on a Friday, this weekly meme is hosted by A Few More Pages
I'll share the first line (or two) of the book I'm currently reading (including the title and author) and let you know what my first impressions are - good or bad!

"Henry and I dug the hole seven feet deep. Any shallower and the corpse was liable to come rising up during the next big flood: Howdy boys! Remember me?"
Mudbound, by Hillary Jordan

Well, this isn't quite the beginning I was expecting. Mudbound, or so I thought, is the story of 30+ year-old Lauren, a girl from the city, who in the 1950s moves out to the Delta with her husband to the farm. It is Lauren's story, but each of the chapters is from a different character's point of view - Lauren, her husband, her maid, her brother-in-law... and it works. The beginning is from her brother-in-law.

I'm loving this book and can't put it down, although we're off on the road today and I can't travel in the car and read. If a genie offered me three wishes that would definitely be one of them! To be able to read in the car without getting that queasy feeling!

  1. I get that queasy feeling in the car reading too. I also get it when they drive to fast as well. ;-)

  2. Sounds really interesting! I am one of the lucky ones who can read in a car. The problem is that I usually travel alone and have to drive. Happy reading!

  3. I like a beginning that screams at me to keep reading. Unless the screaming becomes too strident....

I've heard that reading a Kindle or an iPad in the car rather than a real book does not lead to that queasy feeling.

Now I'm very curious about what happens next. Thanks for visiting my blog.

  9. Hi Ann,

Those first lines would definitely keep me reading, in fact I was so intrigued that I checked out the full synopsis and have already added the book to my reading list.

I'm the same as you, can't read or knit whilst I am the passenger in a car, bus, plane etc.
Apparently it is something to do with the balance in the inner ear, it's certainly a nuisance, especially when others seem to do much of their reading whilst travelling.

I also have to sit near the front in a bus or coach, or the effect is the same and I always have to face the direction of travel on a train.

    Just weird I guess LOL!!!
